As a prepress professional I have spend many hours going through customers' digital files one by one, checking for everything from fonts, to page size and image resolution to make sure the files would print correctly on press. Some of the documents I have worked on include annual reports for companies like Equifax and Coca-cola - where quality is part of their reputation. "I started using FlightCheck Classic back in September 2001 and in that time have used it to preflight over 3,000 jobs. The comment I usually receive from my vendors is that my files are always "perfect" (one actually refers to them as plug and play!) On quick turnarounds I'll call a vendor to give them a "heads up" and see if they foresee any potential snags and the usual response is "we've never had a problem with your files and don't see why we'd have any now."

"My husband and I both own Sir Speedy Clairemont Mesa. When we decided to open the franchise, neither of us had any real printing training, but Sir Speedy hosts a three-week intensive training program. Preflighting is something that they highly encourage. When you open a Sir Speedy, I wouldn't say it's a turnkey operation, but they do recommend a core of software and equipment.

FLIGHTCHECK is the preflight application they recommend. We see all sorts of files come over the counter here. A lot of customers think that just because they've created a file that looks good on the screen that it's going to print the same way. But unless the creator knows what they're doing, there may be missing elements or other problems like low-res images.

To complicate our job, many of our clients don't even supply a proof, so if a font defaults, for example, we may not be able to tell that it's happened. Preflighting allows us to have three options when there's a problem with a file. First, if its a small problem, we can just make the quick fix. Or we can call the customer and tell them what's missing and provide them with a preflight report. They can then either fix it themselves and resubmit the corrected file, or for $70 an hour, we'll correct it for them. The bottom line is money."

Over the years, I have found the Markzware Conversion Tools to be some of the best written and easy to use products on the market.

The latest version of Q2ID (QuarkXpress to InDesign) is the one major tool that Adobe "should have" written into InDesign.

The ability to directly import my customers QuarkXpress (and more recently Microsoft Publisher) files directly into Adobe InDesign with the least amount of additional effort has give me the ability to standardize my workflow and has allowed me to accept jobs that I would have otherwise had to refuse.

Last night, I had a 36 pp full color catalog for Holiday Inn Express here in Marketing that the sales person wanted to send to the customer in PDF form. I could not get the Quark version down under 103 MB, but I pulled the same trick, opening it in InDesign and generating a cleaner-looking 3.3MB PDF. The only issues I had were some slight tracking adjustments where the designer had extended some of the ascenders of the page title font with a vertical line and 6 places where a Zapf Dingbat font was used for the bullet, and that was an easy fix in the InDesign glyph palette.
