Adobe reacts to Printers dismay on InDesign and Adobe PDF service

Posted in Markzware News on January 26th, 2010 by David Dilling – 1 Comment

We reported back a couple weeks ago in a post titled, “Adobe drops Print Service Provider Program – a Quark opportunity?” the news that was seemingly not going over well with printers and print-shops around the world. Since then, we have seen it turn to outrage, such as this piece (Adobe, you’re breaking my heart) from print-industry guru Frank Romano.

Thus, in all fairness, it is good to also get the Adobe side of things. Which you can in this article from WhatTheyThink.com, who has offered excellent reporting on this news byte:

Now, we all know that the Apple tablet is to be announced today (With or without epub format support is the question! [good Q Roelof Janssen!]). Could it be that Adobe sees print drying up and all publishing switching to Steve Job’s latest innovation? I doubt Adobe PDF or InDesign will be dropped soon at all and as a matter of a fact, what moves Apple makes with this new “iSlate” (I hope it is not called that really, as many are saying) could rub Adobe’s hairs the wrong way.

Aldus Adobe Macromedia Quark – Desktop Publishing turns 25

Posted in Markzware News on January 22nd, 2010 by David Dilling – 16 Comments

DTP software ripens at 25!
anno 1985…

There is a little discussion going on over at the Linkedin Group called, “Group of Prepress, Print & Color Management Professionals“. Had to do with this post we did, “Quark caters Quickly to gap in service to printers left by Adobe“. Basically, those users that commented are fine with Adobe and it’s service level, even though many others, such as Frank Romano, who are a bit peeved at Adobe neglecting the market that formed DTP really. Then there was this neat little comment on that Linked in Group, which got me thinking about the interesting history of page layout applications and desktop publishing in general:

Quark is the modern day Aldus!
Quote by: Willie Soto Freelance Graphic Designer
Quark is the Aldus of today

If that is so, then the circle of Desktop Publishing (DTP) is near completion! Especially when you look at the history of this all important field…

Quark caters Quickly to gap in service to printers left by Adobe

Posted in Markzware News on January 20th, 2010 by David Dilling – 1 Comment

We reported last week about how Adobe dropped their service program for printers in a post titled, “Adobe drops Print Service Provider Program – a Quark opportunity?“. Today we see an interesting offer from Quark via their Quark Alliance program for printers:

Quark_Alliance_for_Print_Providers_Printers

Adobe Service Network members are invited to join QuarkAlliance and Quark Promote output provider programs at no cost

Quark is offering Adobe® Service Network (ASN) members, current QuarkAlliance™ members, and all printers interested in Quark Promote the opportunity to join Quark® output provider programs at no cost. This special offer will expire on June 30, 2010, so act now to take advantage of member benefits that can include:

  • Priority technical support
  • QuarkXPress® 8 or upgrades
  • Increased market visibility
  • New potential revenue opportunities

“At a time when some in our industry are moving away from print, Quark is aggressively maintaining its investment in this community,” said Cyndie Shaffstall, director of QuarkAlliance.

Adobe drops Print Service Provider Program – a Quark opportunity?

Posted in Markzware News on January 12th, 2010 by David Dilling – 5 Comments

Was reading this article about how Adobe is dropping a program it had to aide printers, titled, “Adobe Discontinues worldwide Adobe Partner Connection Print Service Provider Program.”

Adobe_Partner_Connection_Print_Service_Provider_Program

One printer commented to the effect that they were actually more aiding Adobe, by helping customers use the software to properly prepare files for print, as many, even agencies, had problems (i.e. preflight) [see comment from "Robert Arena" in article link.]. And then there was this comment (from the many), and since we just highlighted how Quark is networking with print providers via their new Quark Promote program, this indeed may be an opportunity for the Quark stalls:

… Quark should do a quick PR and announce they will take all your CS seats and extend their Quark print program the number of months left with Adobe with all new memberships. Also offer to cross upgrade all seats of CS at the upgrade cost of Quark.

Adobe was aggressive with getting printers from Quark with the provider program. Now that they have got what they can of us, they are dropping it. I am sure for money is the reason as Adobe see’s little increase in market share at this point. This opens a huge door for Quark if they move quickly.

Quark Promote – Quark the graphic designer and printer?

Posted in Markzware News on January 11th, 2010 by David Dilling – 2 Comments

Quark, Inc. has launched a new service in North America. Basically, they are offering basic design services online and printing. You know template based printing products, such as full-color business cards, letterhead, envelopes and more, all through their new Internet printing portal:

Professional designs, high-quality paper, 4-colors, and shipping INCLUDED!
http://quarkpromote.quark.com/

It should be pointed out that Quark is not printing themselves and is apparently working through a wide network of print providers. Also, they offer this in the design area, “Find a designer or join our graphic designer community” which sees them reaching out to the creative end of the workflow.

What is your take on this? Is it a logical move from the makers of QuarkXPress, the once standard in layout design or a step too far into competition with those very graphic designer users?

PasteBoard XT XPress 8, XTerminator and the PasteBoard XTension

Posted in Markzware News on October 27th, 2009 by David Dilling – Be the first to comment

Many of you QuarkXPress users out there may have heard of our PasteBoard XT. For those new to it, this Quark XTension, one of the oldest out there, changes the width and height of the QuarkXPress pasteboard. It allows one to adjust by value as well as by percentage, giving a wider range of options than that within the QuarkXPress application. Pasteboard costs only $29.00 and is available for Mac and runs in Quark 7 or Quark 8.

In the past, as in QuarkXPress v3.33 past, there was a version of Pasteboard XTension that was a requirement in order to work with the document. (Ask some of the older ones of us about those times!) We of course adjusted that, however you may find the need for our free XTerminator Quark XT, now called the  Kill PasteBoard XT which will remove the requirement of needing Pasteboard, for really old, almost legacy files you may come across.

Adobe, GWG and PDF/X-4; PDF specifications for print workflows

Posted in Markzware News, Markzware Training on October 6th, 2009 by David Dilling – 2 Comments

As we have read here in the past, “On the Evolution of PDF; Adobe PDF/X-5g with OPI type prepress workflow“, there are seemingly enough PDF specifications out there. With that in mind, here is an interesting development:

Adobe to host ‘landmark’ PDF meeting

“Adobe Systems will host a “landmark meeting” of the Ghent PDF Workgroup (GWG) later this month that is expected to prove pivotal to the development of PDF automation specifications.

Members of the GWG attending the meeting, which will be held at Adobe’s San Jose headquarters from 29-30 October, will discuss specifications based on the latest PDF/X-4 release.

GWG chairman David Zwang said that the 2009 GWG specifications would result in “some of the most profound advancements in automated PDF compliance”….

“….Those present at the meeting will also discuss and extend ad ticket support for electronic ads and insertion orders, and solidify spectral colour considerations for spot colour identification.”

ID2Q customer: QuarkXPress application preferences file damaged; a solution

Posted in Markzware Conversion Tools on September 29th, 2009 by David Dilling – 2 Comments

Customer Question: We have just purchased your ID2Q (InDesign to Quark) application (XTension) and I have followed the install notes but when I launch QuarkXpress, I receive the following error:
The application preferences file is damaged.  Please remove it and re-launch QuarkXpress.  [297]

I would appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Many thanks

Dear Sir

Thank you for purchasing ID2Q. As you read and saw, in theory the installation of ID2Q is pretty straight forward. You can view a video on it here as well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6j8bYpzlts

The error you are getting about QuarkXPress application preferences sounds more like something to contact Quark about, sorry. From what I searched online though, it may be as simple as this:

You need to recreate the Preferences of QuarkXPress.
Windows -
Location of the Quark preferences on Windows XP:
C:\ Documents and Settings \ (Name of User) \ Application Data \ Quark
\ QuarkXPress x.x

Location of the Quark preferences on Windows Vista:
C:\ Users \ (Name of User) \ AppData \ Local \ Quark
\ QuarkXPress x.x
“You need to recreate the Preferences of QuarkXPress. For that navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Your user\Application data\\Quark Rename the folder from QuarkXPress 7 to old QuarkXPress and Relaunch QuarkXPress. Yes you need to reset all the Preferences of QuarkXPress afterwards. Note: Application data is hidden folder. You need to unhide that folder from Tools>>folder options>>View tab>>Show hidden files and folders.”
