FlightCheck Professional v6.5 – changing machines

Posted in Markzware Training on March 16th, 2010 by David Dilling – Be the first to comment

As we have discussed in an earlier post, FlightCheck Professional v6.5 is licensed to one person, one machine. How can you change your license from one machine to another?

Changing Machines-
Wherever FlightCheck Professional v6.5 is installed, you can de-activate it from that machine in a very easy fashion. If you want to switch a hard-drive or machines, it *is* very important to first de-activate your license. Then simply re-install, or better said, activate on your other system. Under the “Help” menu up above in FlightCheck on the active machine, choose, “Activation Window” and then select de-activate and then re-install where you like. Here are some screen shots of the process:

PitStop Connect and Preflighting with FlightCheck Professional

Posted in Markzware News on March 12th, 2010 by David Dilling – Be the first to comment

Read over on PrintWeek an interesting development in the area of “preflighting,” which will be shown in May at IPEX 2010 in the UK. Interesting, for we have been saying for years just demanding a PDF file in a certain flavor does not work:

Enfocus unveils PitStop Connect pre-flighting tool

Barney Cox, printweek.com, 09 March 2010
Enfocus has launched PitStop Connect – a software tool that printers can supply to clients to ensure files are produced to their specification so that there are “no more headaches” for creatives.

The reason it is even more interesting, is for the fact that preflighting does not start with checking a PDF!  No, it starts with checking native artwork and Quark, InDesign or Illustrator layouts. That is what FlightCheck Professional and it’s exportable Ground Controls or preflight profiles offer. The ability to share what to check for, BEFORE a PDF is created. The fact that just jamming a PDF spec down the throats of the designers has not worked, as you’ll read in the article, also does not surprise me, for we have been seeing and saying that all along! We read in part:

Prepress systems administrator: “The best thing about FlightCheck today– it can be customized for your situation.”

We have seen the ROI and value preflighting adds to the design-to-print workflow in chart form, now let’s hear from a real user. In this case, it is from Randy Jamerson, Prepress systems administrator for EBSCO Media.

Located in Birmingham, Alabama EBSCO Media is one of the largest full-service sheetfed printers in the country. More info on their operation at the end, now onto how they use FlightCheck:

FlightCheck has evolved into a very robust and customizable product.  For example, if your workflow automatically converts RGB to CMYK and honors tagged profiles, you can customize FlightCheck so that it does not flag these as error conditions.

Subject: Re: Markzware/Congratulations/Questions for blog

Here are some thoughts that maybe you can use in your blog.

I was hired at EBSCO Media to be the first “Preflight” person in 1994. We
didn’t have FlightCheck and desktop publishing programs ( Quark and
Pagemaker) at that time had non-existent or very rudimentary tools for
preflight.  Every image and graphic file associated with a job had to be
individually scrutinized. When FlightCheck arrived, it was one of those
“greater than sliced bread” events.

Aldus Adobe Macromedia Quark – Desktop Publishing turns 25

Posted in Markzware News on January 22nd, 2010 by David Dilling – 16 Comments

DTP software ripens at 25!
anno 1985…

There is a little discussion going on over at the Linkedin Group called, “Group of Prepress, Print & Color Management Professionals“. Had to do with this post we did, “Quark caters Quickly to gap in service to printers left by Adobe“. Basically, those users that commented are fine with Adobe and it’s service level, even though many others, such as Frank Romano, who are a bit peeved at Adobe neglecting the market that formed DTP really. Then there was this neat little comment on that Linked in Group, which got me thinking about the interesting history of page layout applications and desktop publishing in general:

Quark is the modern day Aldus!
Quote by: Willie Soto Freelance Graphic Designer
Quark is the Aldus of today

If that is so, then the circle of Desktop Publishing (DTP) is near completion! Especially when you look at the history of this all important field…

Meta data clouds – Graphic Designers, Publishers and Printers alike

Posted in Markzware Conversion Tools, Markzware News on October 30th, 2009 by David Dilling – Be the first to comment

Since ICANN, approved the use of non-Latin characters in domain names today, I thought we would stick on the Internet side with this post. Jörg Oyen, the publishing, Adobe and Quark QPS expert friend of ours over in Germany at Oyen.de, sent me a rather ominous Instant message on Skype the other day, “Do you like balls”? he asked. For some reason, I thought, “oh, must be Google Balls” for it sounds very Googlish (sp?) No, he meant Tagul balls or Tagul meta clouds. Here, you can see Jörg’s meta ball from his site here:

screen-shot-2009-10-30-at-113313-am

Here is the Markzware meta data cloud (no mystery here):

Beware! This Markzware cloud is not complete and this is limitation of Tagul only getting the first 350 keywords or something to that effect. We see FlightCheck in there, but no Q2ID or ID2Q, our popular Quark-to-InDesign and the other way around as well, conversion tools.

Want to see how we made this? Watch the video here, for good control over your meta data, keywords and general SEO is very important for graphic designers, publishers and printers alike (Yes, print-shops included!):

PDF Preflight Problems, Native file preflight; preflighting article

Posted in Markzware News on October 28th, 2009 by David Dilling – Be the first to comment

I caught this article, “Top Ten Articles on Digital-Engineer.net” over on Graphicstart, which had one, very interesting piece in it’s top ten list:

7. Preflighters around the world: This is you

If we click on that preflight article above, we see it is about an Enfocus survey on preflighting (As Tele2002 accurately said in the first comment, that is more “postflighting“, but anyway.). It is the last comment which I also wanted to share, for it brings home the importance of education;

Marco Kramer |
Yes I suppose so! I didn’t know about Prepressure and have bookmarked it. Looks like I’ve got me some reading to do! Great info about JDF as well.

The boys from Markzware also wrote about this topic: PDF Preflight Problems; same as fifteen years ago -Enfocus survey results

On that note, don’t forget that FlightCheck Professional, the tool for both the native file preflight as well as the postflight or check on the resulting PDF document, is out as version 6.5. Adobe Publisher (?!), indd file, Microsoft and InDesign plug-in – Publisher to InDesign

Posted in Markzware Conversion Tools, Markzware News on October 16th, 2009 by David Dilling – Be the first to comment

Every once in a while, we hear people looking for, Adobe Publisher! Now we know they really mean Microsoft Publisher or wait, did they mean Adobe InDesign? Nine times out of ten though it is someone who needs Publisher to InDesign conversion to get an indd file and are looking for the InDesign Plugin, PUB2ID (Mac or Win; $199) from Markzware.

Since this just happened today and it’s Friday, I thought it as good as any time to share this little tidbit of page layout information. You can try an InDesign demo by clicking here and a Microsoft Publisher demo by clicking here. No matter which you end up using, an InDesign file extension or MSPUB, we are here to help you free your content!

Twitter and the beta release of PageZephyr to search and index Adobe and Quark documents

Posted in Markzware Conversion Tools, Markzware News on October 15th, 2009 by David Dilling – 3 Comments

Markzware launched, at PRINT 09 in September, a new content search engine technology called PageZephyr. This beta Macintosh application will index desktop publishing file formats such as Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress and soon other document types, like PDF, Microsoft Publisher and even “the rage” of it’s day, PageMaker. Here we see some of the excitement generated from the show-floor and one simple exclusive press release, which Mary Gay (Public Relations) pushed up court… and re-tweets via Twitter! Watch Patrick Marchese, co-founder and CEO of Markzware, demonstrate PageZephyr…

It is amazing how fast information can travel in this day and age; which is one of the said purposes of PageZepyr; to bridge the printed world with the Internet or online world.

TRANSCRIPT:

All right, so “Content Search Engine“, so Mary Gay, tell us…. Hey everybody, were here at Print 09 in Chicago. It has been a pretty interesting show here, because we have announced a new product that, which is completely different from our “normal joe” that we’ve been showing here at the shows with preflighting. Were going into a whole new direction, which is ‘exciting’! Because were looking into the future with, well, here it is- Content Search Engine.
