Quark To InDesign – Convert Page Elements And Paragraph Styles

Posted in Markzware Conversion Tools on June 29th, 2009 by David Dilling – 3 Comments

Here was a forum question over on the very popular InDesignTalk forum; which I get an email digest for. This had to do with how to convert page elements and paragraph styles from within Quark documents into InDesign Adobe files and of course applying those styles when you convert to Adobe files:

“In the past year or two I converted many files from Quark to InDesign for our education unit. I am now needing to make some changes to the files and my boss blithely pointed out that the original author was a faithful user of style sheets in Quark. I am a faithful user of styles in InDesign, but I must admit I paid no attention to them when I did the conversion. Now when I look at the files I see lots of styles in the InDesign panels, but none of them seem to be applied to any text. Am I correct about that? Did I miss a huge (and in retrospect ghastly) part of the conversion process?

Thanks as always for sharing your vast experience….

Graphic Design Professional

Markzware recently had an opportunity to discuss with freelance graphic artist Jo-Ann LaForge from Cottage Grove, Minnesota about Q2ID.

Markzware: Please share with us how you learned of Markzware’s conversion tool, Q2ID.

LaForge: I desperately needed something to convert my older QuarkXPress files and did a Google search and found the Q2ID plug-in.

Markzware: Did you find the conversion from QuarkXPress to InDesign to be seamless and reliable?

LaForge: I was very pleased to find that the plug-in worked seamlessly. The files converted quickly and there was very little reformatting I needed to do, which has saved me a countless number of hours.

Markzware: Would you consider the investment of Q2ID worthwhile and would you recommend it to other creative professionals who need to convert content from QuarkXPress to InDesign?

LaForge: I thought the price seemed a little high at first, I have had experiences where I paid for other plug-ins and ended up very disappointed by the performance of the plug-in and in the end it did not fit my need or perform as it was represented. I remembered reading about Markzware’s product in MacLife magazine and it received good reviews and I needed a solution.

If like many designers you are in the process of making the big switch from QuarkXPress to InDesign, you know it is not a trivial undertaking. You have to retrain your brain to a new way of working and remind your fingers which keys to hit for those newfangled shortcuts. You are in a hurry to get up to speed, and you have just been asked to create a client’s next newsletter in InDesign. The template for the newsletter is currently in QuarkXPress. You’ve finally come to that fork in the road: Do you build a new newsletter template from scratch, or do you take the easy way out and just open the file with InDesign? If there’s a lot of work in the template, go for File > Open. While it’s surprising this works at all, you should know what converts and what does not.

OPENING QUARKXPRESS FILES IN INDESIGN
Since the beginning, InDesign has had the ability to open QuarkXPress files created in versions 3.32 through 4.11—that hasn’t changed since InDesign One-Oh. What has changed, of course, is QuarkXPress itself; after all, we’re up to version 7.0 now. Yet InDesign CS3 still cannot open up documents created in QuarkXPress versions later than 4.11. Why is that? At the release of QuarkXPress 5.0, the file architecture of QuarkXPress documents changed—one imagines, to thwart opening by wily InDesign users.
