Markzware recently spoke with Craig Pearson, Executive Vice-President at Maharishi University of Management, an accredited liberal arts university in Fairfield, Iowa, about his recent experience with one of Markzware’s conversion tools Q2ID
.
Markzware: What types of print and/or electronic media are you responsible for producing?
Pearson: I recently completed a book related to our approach to education.
Markzware: What are some of the key creative applications that make up your workflow now? Obviously you are using QuarkXPress in some way?
Pearson: I had initially created the book in Quark 6, in the Apple Tiger operating system. This is a book of about 700 pages, 8 1/2 x 11, full color throughout, and very graphics intensive, with hundreds of photographs, call-out quotes, charts, tables, etc. Fortunately I was able to find a printing company that could use this now older software and operating system. But obviously one needs to keep pace with changing software and systems. When I tried upgrading to Quark 7, there were major problems with certain fonts, text flows and tints. When I tried using Quark 6 in the Apple Leopard operating system, there were similar problems.
Gloria & Rob Reed stopped by the Markzware booth while attending the MoGo Media Event launch of Adobe CS4. Both were interested in finding out more about Q2ID and what how it could help with Quark and Adobe CS legacy files and converting over from QuarkXPress to Adobe InDesign.
Cathy Palmer, trainer and consultant for Digital Design Tools in Madison Wisconsin shares her recommendation to everyone regarding Markzware’s document conversion QuarkXPress To Adobe Indesign otherwise known as Q2ID.
When clients hand you source files so ancient or obscure that they’re unreadable for design layout file conversion, don’t despair. Part 1 of my file conversion survival kit will have you repurposing those files lickety split — without asking the client to lift a finger, and without forcing you to buy every application under the sun just to open the occasional weirdo document.
I bet they forgot to tell you in design school that you need to become an expert in computer file formats to survive, let alone succeed, in our field.
Consider graphic file formats. Your clients and vendors assume you know the limitations and appropriate use of all the image file types: JPEG, TIFF, PSD, AI, EPS, GIF, PNG, DNG, BMP… Tell me, did you take that class at Design School U?
Luckily, most layout programs (Web, print, or presentation) can import a wide variety of graphics file formats; and if they can’t, a quick trip to an image converter utility (or in and out of Photoshop, Illustrator, or CorelDRAW) will spit out a version in an appropriate format.
DesktopMedia would like to thank Markzware, the leading software developer in preflight and file utilities for creative workflows for their generous donation of FlightCheck Professional, FlightCheck Designer and Q2ID to the DesktopMedia training lab. Not only will we put this to good use exposing and teaching as many professionals as possible, but, in the coming months we’ll be writing about how this powerful tool can help your organization!
